  1. From yesterday’s readings (pretty sure it was the same for RC and Lutheran this week):

“Since everything is to be dissolved in this way,
what sort of persons ought you to be,
conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion,
waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames
and the elements melted by fire.
    But according to his promise
we await new heavens and a new earth
    in which righteousness dwells.
Therefore, beloved, since you await these things,
be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.” – 2 Pt 3:8-14.

Conducting ourselves in holiness and devotion…waiting…eager to be found without spot or blemish…at peace. At a time when everything is topsy-turvey, how we live is going to matter more to outsiders that whether or not we can identify the anti-christ or if we are living our best life now. We need to live in the moment of Christ’s return, which is every moment. I suppose that sounds like wretched urgency. Wanting to be ready to meet the One whom we love, and who also loves us: I don’t think that is wretched urgency. It’s a pretty narrow fence to fall off of, I guess.

  2. I just started listening to your Internet Monk podcasts because I was running dry on Coffee Cup Apologetics. Good work!

I grew up in Lexington, so go Cats!!!

I just thought I would recommend a couple things after hearing your rants. The Barna group put out a great new book called “Unchristian” which researches all of the things mentioned in your last rant. And I’m not quite as down on contemporary Christian music as you are, I do think Andrew Peterson stands out. I also would recommend Edison Glass, even though they’re not really acoustic.

  3. The awful thing about the Reverend Billy is that there is more of the true message of Jesus in his talks than in people like Osteen, Joyce Meyer, etc.

  4. I got to see Andrew Peterson and crew two years ago, and it was phenomenal. I’m looking forward to seeing them again when they come to Charlotte. Anyone who hasn’t checked out Andrew Osenga’s stuff really should.

Legalisim… what a subject. I cringe a lot when I read the Gospels because I know I have too often been the zealous hypocrite Jesus was talking to. The grace of God is of such a magnitude that it covers even the foolish hypocrite who repents.

  5. That rant is just what I needed for Advent. This was a podcast I had already planned to save for future listening before you really hit the mark at the end. Now it’s sure to become a reminder for me. As a father of 2 pre-teen boys and a volunteer with a youth group, I realize that these kids are only partly paying attention to what we say (if at all), but they are watching closely what we do. And that has humbled me into trying to say less and act more… and pray a whole lot more for help along the way.

  6. Rev. Spencer, thanks for the mention of “The Treasury.” It is good advice for folks who want one, to get one soon. The orders for them have really started to flood in and we may well be out of stock on them in the next week or so. We will, of course, reprint, but it would not be available before Christmas.
