Over the past week or so I’ve been enjoying Iris Dement’s new album, Sing The Delta, which the Boston Globe called, “a work of rare, unvarnished grace and power.” I’ll be doing a review later this month.
For tonight, enjoy this classic song by Iris Dement. It almost always brings tears to my eyes as its simple words speak of the fragility and beauty of ordinary human life.
I can’t think of two people with more “distinctive” voices that fit so well together! Thanks, Ted.

Oh, how my wife hates Iris Dement. To her, Iris’s voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard and it sends her screaming and running for the volume control on the radio (we have a community station around here and they play all sorts of stuff).
Me, I’m comfy with Iris and can appreciate her songs without really loving her voice. I will say that she’s excellent at what she does, and my favorite of her songs is done with John Prine singing “In Spite of Ourselves”.
Rated PG-13 and not likely to be sung at many Baptist weddings:

Ditto CM. “It almost always brings tears to my eyes as its simple words speak of the fragility and beauty of ordinary human life.”
My heart can rest in the lyrics. Beautiful. Comforting to me in the thought that I too gave joy to my mother, honored her wishes not to be put in a nursing home… She passed peacefully a month ago in her home. Yes, my life is small & ordinary.

I adore Iris Dement. Her voice is, um…, distinctive, and not to everybody’s taste, but it works for me. Thanks for the tip about her new album.

I’m moved that what gives her life meaning, even in the darkness, is what she’s done for others (her mother, her lover, others). Do you think she’s been reading Levinas between sets? Great song, thanks for directing us to it.
