More Music for Lent from Patty Griffin…
In the middle of the night
We try and try with all our might
To light a little light down here
In the middle of the night
We dream of a million kites
Flying high above
The sadness and the fear

That sounds like it was composed out of simultaneous sadness and hope. I suppose hope is only ever experienced with darkness. Why else hope? Beautiful song.

Candles.
A candle itself is not a prayer,
however the lighting of a candle on entering Church on Sunday gives us focus to our prayer,
praise and communion.
The candle directs out thoughts and prayers to ask for God’s blessing on those around us, those we love and those who have gone before us and are now in God’s presence.
It also directs our prayer consideration as to how to improve our relationships with those we love and those (who quite frankly) we do not love. Those who we find hard to love can be a threat to our life and mental well being. Mindful prayer is required.
A simple flickering flame with a trickle of grey smoke rises to the throne of God. So our prayers rise too.
SIMPLE
Bless yourself as you leave the Church with joy.
The candle remains, flickering on for us as we go on our way to serve our Lord in the world and so our prayers continue to rise.
Thanks be to God.
