“Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple…” (Mark 11:11)
Tomorrow is Palm Sunday, the day we commemorate the Triumphal Entry of Messiah Jesus into Jerusalem. In the Christian Year, this marks the beginning of Holy Week. Much that happened during that week took place in and around the Temple.
In the following video clip, N.T. Wright explains some of the ways that Jesus’ ministry was intentionally designed to counteract “Temple” theology and point to his own work as that which would supercede the “signpost” of the Temple and bring the reality to which it pointed to pass.
I had the same thought as I listened. Jesus makes a specific claim as to why he is cleaning house. That said, I think Wright is overall correct. His argument about the Temple as a signpost pointing forward to the real thing is very much the same argument that the author of Hebrews is making.

Do you remember what he says?

Thomas, this is a 5 minute video. Wright covers Jesus’ statement in his “For Everyone” bible study series, and his book, “Jesus and the Victory of God”.

A good video, but his explanation does not include Jesus’s own explanation of what he was doing. Did he not say, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers”? (NIV)

weird, I just wrote a post about this very topic of Jesus and the temple and also with N.T. Wright in the mix. When I came over to your blog, it just reaffirmed my thoughts. Thanks for posting that.

I could listen all day and night to anyone who can explain Biblical Truths to me, in a clear and concise way, that points me to the Truth of Jesus Christ! And not in a condemning or heavily budrensome manner that points to me and all I’ve done and continue to do wrong.
Thank you for sharing!
