A Merry Christmas from Internet Monk

The Birth of Christ, Albertinelli

Welcome, all wonders in one sight!
Eternity shut in a span;
Summer in winter; day in night;
Heaven in earth, and God in man.
Great little one, whose all-embracing birth
Lifts earth to heaven, stoops heaven to earth.

From “In the Holy Nativity of Our Lord”
Richard Crashaw

  1. She may be becoming a follower of Luther. His language was pretty salty at times. In fact, one of his rather mild lines is said to be the following:

    ““You are a crude ass, and an ass you will remain!” (From Against the Roman Papacy, an Institution of the Devil, pg. 281 of Luther’s Works, Vol. 41).

  2. Salvation is encompassed in Jesus’ Incarnation. The cross is not a magic talisman, not a discreet moment or series of moments at the end of Jesus’ life that wrought salvation for the world apart from everything that went before; his cross was salvific because of the identity of the one who bore it, and he carried if from the moment he came into the world. Jesus is salvation. He walked the way of the cross because of who he was, and he walked it long before he, as an infant, had even learned to walk. Jesus, Lord — and Savior — at thy birth.

  4. Thy Nativity, oh Christ our God, has shone to the world the light of wisdom; for by it, those who worshipped the stars were taught by a star to worship Thee, the Sun of Righteousness, and to behold Thee, the Dayspring from on high. Oh Lord, glory to Thee!

    Merry Christmas – Christ is born, glorify him!

  5. Bad spelling we can live with.
    Bad theology we can’t.
    Or something like that.
    🙂

    I hope some humor and joy comes your way in the midst of what you’re experiencing, Susan.

  6. From Pope Francis’ Christmas Eve message: “Christmas reminds us that God continues to love us all, even the worst of us. To me, to you, to each of us, he says today: ‘I love you and I will always love you, for you are precious in my eyes’,……God does not love you because you think and act the right way. He loves you, plain and simple. His love is unconditional; it does not depend on you.”

  10. David,
    Some of us don’t have the linguistics to create the paragraphs which astound us with their complexity and knowledge.
    This such a source to satisfying our community. We are all equal if some have less linguistic skills.
    We learn so much from each other either in the intellectual aspects of our conversations or in the simplistic phrases which escape the lips of some such as I, who look for knowledge such as we can find in the blog.
    We are so privileged.

    Blessings to all. Susan.

  11. I have a walking stick, do I count? I wobble (physically).

    My faith waves and wobbles , which is different depending on the day and the weather and my state of mind.
    My garden gasps for rain.
    When we are in verdant pastures, metaphorically speaking, ie the sun and rain are in good measure, is so different to the days which are otherwise.
    I have just emailed my son a photo of my back lawn. I use that word carefully. It is dust with a few dandylions. My trees are under stress. Two have died. Hand held half hour hose watering on Sundays with Town supply.
    I have two water tanks for garden purposes and they are dry.
    All John’s hard work is under threat and I feel this keenly.
    It was his joy. Every day he spent in the garden.

    So I wobble on. Susan.
